Logically, Frinsa is one of the main interested parties in ensuring that healthy populations of tuna and other fish species remain healthy and grow to reach levels of optimum balance.

As an involved and co-responsible participant, it is in the company's interest that resources are used rationally, and allow existing and future demand to be met respectfully and sustainably.

White tuna The finest tuna

White tuna is considered to be the finest of tunas due to its texture and intense flavor. This kind of blue fish differs from other tunas in its whiter meat and more refined and intense flavor. Frinsa is well-known for its high-quality white tuna obtained during the fishing season using traditional fishing methods in order to protect the marine environment. The result is a perfect canned white tuna and white tuna belly with an extraordinary flavor.

The global demand for pole-and-line tuna continues to grow at an extremely rapid rate. Therefore, it is essential we do all we can to raise awareness throughout the sector and at every stage of the supply chain of the need to act responsibly. IPNLF will be a key ally to achieving this aim.

Company Policies and Reports

Frinsa was the first Spanish cannery to actively collaborate with SFP (Sustainable Fisheries Partnership), a non-governmental organisation specialising in the promotion of sustainable fisheries and the defence of the marine environment along every step of the production chain. Frinsa was also the first Spanish cannery to become a member of the ISSF (International Seafood Sustainability Foundation), and industry-based initiative promoting the improvement of the marine ecosystem using scientific-based research.

The importance of sustainability is made clear throughout Frinsa's history; the company has steadily improved in terms of traceability, the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and responsible tuna sourcing policies.

This is further highlighted in the company’s 2021 Sustainability Policy, which outlines the adopted principles towards sustainability, including ‘fair purchase’, ‘traceability’, ‘transparency’ and the ‘protection of the marine environment and resources'.

In terms of social accountability, the company objective is that all our suppliers participate in a BSCI/SEDEX program, or another socially-oriented recognised initiative. This will help Frinsa, which will have more supply options, our employees, who will work under better conditions, and our supply chain to be more transparent and socially conscious.

Fisheries Improvement Toolbox (FIT) Engagement

Frinsa joined IPNLF by showing their support for the Tuna 2020 Sustainability Declaration. This agreement is intended to encourage actions and partnerships from and between tuna harvesters, processors, retailers, traders and related non-profits and concerned governments, to improve the health of tuna populations worldwide. The initiative, which is being promoted by the non-profit World Economic Forum, is in response to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) for the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources.
