Sustainable Fisheries We reaffirm our dedication to sustainable practices and responsible collaboration for the benefit of both people and the planet.

Sustainable fishing means leaving enough fish in the ocean and protecting habitats and threatened species. By safeguarding the oceans, people who depend on fishing can maintain their livelihoods. Responsible fishing practices ensure the long-term health and stability of fish populations and marine ecosystems. Sustainable fishing helps preserve the natural balance of marine ecosystems. By protecting habitats and allowing fish populations to replenish, these practices contribute to the overall health of the ocean environment. Responsible fishing supports the livelihoods of coastal communities by ensuring a stable and sustainable supply of fish, maintaining economic stability, and providing job opportunities for local fishers and their families. By adopting sustainable practices, we ensure that fish stocks remain healthy and abundant for future generations, benefiting both the environment and the continued availability of resources for the fishing industry and local communities.

Our tuna is caught by Indonesian handline fishers involved in the AP2HI Tuna Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) and is MSC Fishery Certified. Our fishers use handlines on small boats. Handline fishing is a sustainable method as fishers target fish individually with low environmental impact and a low incidence of bycatch. Through the FIP activity, fishers are trained to avoid capturing endangered, threatened, and protected species, as well as best practices in sea safety and accurate catch recording. Such training ensures that the handline fishing community adheres to sustainable standards and continuously improves their practices.

Local People and Women Empowerement We are committed to empowering local people & women by providing them with opportunities to grow and develop their skills, contributing to the economic and social well-being of their communities.

Nusatuna has engaged Sedex in order to establish social responsibility in our tuna supply chain. Sedex is a global non-profit organization that offers an ethical trade platform for companies to monitor and manage their social, ethical and environmental impacts. Implementation of Sedex in our seafood supply chain will help us to practice responsible sourcing of seafood products.

By joining Sedex, we can collaborate with our suppliers, assess their supply chains and mitigate risk by monitoring our suppliers’ and vessels ethical and social performance. Sedex enables businesses to improve their credibility and reputation by ensuring that they comply with national and international labour laws, environmental protection regulations, and product safety standards. Sedex implementation can also help in safeguarding workers’ rights while ensuring the sustainable use of marine resources.

Corporate social responsibility in our local fishing communities is a core value of NusaTuna. In the Bitung area where our main tuna processing facilities are located, we are focused on working with local schools to assist them with needs and improvements to the schools that are not currently being realized.

Food Safety Our facilities meet BRCGS standards and include an advanced laboratory to ensure all products fit human consumption
Transparency We can trace the finished goods back to the fishers who caught the fish.
Innovation We are constantly seeking ways to improve the method to bring superior quality of the products and embrace eco-friendly fisheries.

HANDLINE TUNA FISHING - A CULTURE AND A LIVELIHOOD.

Indonesian small-scale fisheries provide our source of tuna. These fishers focus on one-by-one catches of large,  superior grade yellowfin that is being handled by ready-to-eat standards and day or multiday boat fishing trips.

We are committed to long term marine sustainability and work closely with the International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF) to promote one-by-one tuna fisheries and Indonesian Pole & Line and Handline Fisheries Association (AP2HI). Our commitment to source fish sustainably contributes to our corporate commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 “Life below water” which includes providing access for sustainably managed small-scale fisheries to marine resources and profitable markets. We also contribute to this by working collaboratively with competitors, customers, association and NGOs to secure the long-term sustainability of oceans through a number of industry wide initiatives.
