What is Pole-and-Line? One Man, One Hook, One Fishing Pole and One Fish

Modernising traditional methods isn’t always easy. But Santa Catarina managed just that, joining traditional methods with contemporary demands in a successful effort. We are talking about “Pole and Line fishing”, meaning, one Man, one Hook, one Fishing pole and one Fish.

The social responsibility of companies has an increasingly important role, even more so if we’re talking about small places. The island of São Jorge has a population of about 8900 inhabitants. 4000 live in the district of Calheta, where 130 work directly for the Santa Catarina factory: it is the biggest employer of São Jorge. The tuna is still processed (cleaned and cut) by hand and the consumer knows that, they understand that that “little can” was wrapped with care by a person, not a machine.

Pole-and-line

This fishing method provides the most selective targeting of tuna possible, with minimal bycatch of non-target fish and marine wildlife like dolphins, turtles and sharks. Pole-and-line fishing targets schools of tuna near the ocean surface, and therefore only needs to use short lengths of line on each pole, typically  5-10m.

Skipjack Tuna

Skipjack are generally smaller in size compared to other tuna species and also have shorter lifecycles, meaning they can start reproducing very early, after only one year. This has benefits for sustainability, and makes it one of the most abundant tuna species.
