Horizon Fisheries Pvt Ltd began operating in 2003 after taking over the Maandhoo Fisheries Complex from the Maldivian Government and building a new state-of-the-art cannery with 3000 tonnes of cold storage and extensive staff facilities for all their workers.

Located in Laamu Atoll, Horizon Fisheries became one of the leading tuna fish processing and marketing companies in the Maldives. It produces a wide range of canned tuna as well as industrial pouches and cooked loins for export. Horizon is committed to being the leading quality cannery in the Maldives alongside promoting and delivering the highest quality sustainably caught tuna. Horizon is proud to be the world first processor to be dually certified to the MSC and Fairtrade USA standards.

Pole and Line Exclusive

Described as the cleanest and greenest form of tuna fishery, pole and line fishers have a relationship with each fish – each fish being caught individually by the fisher and brought on board.

In 2018. Horizon Fisheries once again, achieved gold as the ‘Top Exporter in the Maldives’ for processed and value-added tuna products. This was the fourth time that they had been awarded such an achievement which is a testament to their amazing work ethic and commitment to high-quality products.

Producing Fairtrade USA -certified shelf-stable tuna products at our local factory reflects our company’s long-standing commitment towards a fair and socially responsible partnership with fishers, island communities, and our factory workers in the Maldives. The Fairtrade premium and the projects it supports have strengthened our relationship with the fishers throughout the Maldives.

The Maldives pole-and-line skipjack fishery has been operating for centuries and has been the lifeline of the Maldivian economy since before the boom of the tourism industry in the mid 1970s. The fishery not only provides a large proportion of the country’s income from the tuna trade and export, but also provides one of the only sources of protein for the Maldivian population, also contributing to a stable livelihood. The Maldivian pole-and-line fishery is located in the Arabian Sea within the Indian Ocean.

Horizon Fisheries fully embraces and understands the absolute importance of, and compliance to, all applicable health and safety standards and regulations crucial in supporting and protecting their dedicated workforce at the factory and along the whole supply chain. This can be seen all the way from their fishery, which works closely with the Fairtrade programme supported by Horizon and Blue You through the entire value chain to their finished sustainable products.

Feb 2020 – Addressing Plastic Pollution

Horizon Fisheries launched a project to install water purifiers on fishing vessels. The project was inaugurated on Maandhoo island as part of the wider ongoing initiative to declare Laamu single-use plastics free, further supporting the local community and environment.
